After coffee, the first order of business every day is to open all of the blinds. Most of our apartment’s windows face East and overlook a large pond, giving us a lovely view of the sunrise. At that time, the pond is still — save the occasional small gator enjoying the peaceful water. By 7:35am, the fountains awaken the pond and the sky has left behind it’s more colorful palette of pinks, oranges, or purples, and resumed its normal range of Florida blues.
As soon as there is natural light to be had, it must be welcomed into the house.
“It’s bright, Mommy!” This is how my three-year-old likes to tell me it’s time for her day to begin. The ‘bright’ signals it’s time for books and breakfast, art and imagination, turtle spotting and toy scattering. Time for prairies and princesses and Potter glasses. Time for online school, too much screen time, and a daily sisterly saga — best friends forever or arch-nemesis, it depends on the minute. Clutter and crackers, unending.

Bright is how our days begin — these days that are draining and delightful, long and lazy and somehow lovely. From my view, it is very bright indeed.
